Rabid Groundhog Bites Resident in New Jersey's Atlantic County

Health officials in Atlantic County, New Jersey confirmed that a groundhog tested positive for rabies after it bit a homeowner who was attempting to trap it. The bite occurred on the homeowner's leg, and two outdoor cats were also bitten and are being monitored for symptoms. The animal was located dead, allowing officials to conduct the rabies test. This is the second rabid animal identified in the county this year. The homeowner received immediate post‑exposure treatment and is expected to make a full recovery, while the cats remain under observation.

Local residents were warned to avoid contact with wildlife acting unusually and to seek medical attention promptly after any animal bite.
