Rabies confirmed in bat found in Mackay, Idaho

Health officials in Idaho have confirmed a new rabies case in a bat found in Mackay. This follows a previous positive test in Bannock County earlier this year. Eastern Idaho Public Health noted that rabid bats are detected throughout the state annually, with Eastern Idaho typically recording at least one case per season.

Medical experts warn that bats are the only natural reservoir for the virus in Idaho. Because bat teeth are small, bites or scratches may be painless and leave minimal marks, making it possible for individuals to be bitten in their sleep without realizing it. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) if a bat is found in a room with a sleeping person or an unattended child.

Public health officials advise that while rabies is fatal once symptoms develop, vaccines are nearly 100% effective if administered promptly. Pet owners are encouraged to keep animal vaccinations up to date, and anyone suspecting contact with a bat should seek immediate medical attention.
