Rabies virus detected in bat in Würzburg

The rabies virus (Lyssavirus) has been detected in a bat in Würzburg, marking the first known case of this kind in the Lower Franconian city. This follows two positive tests in broad-winged bats found in the nearby Aschaffenburg district in June.

The Bavarian State Office for Health and Food Safety (LGL) maintains that the infection risk from contact with native bats remains low. However, authorities advise caution and warn against touching any found bats with bare hands, particularly those that are unable to fly, exhibit atypical behavior, or are seen during daylight hours.

Symptoms of rabies in bats often include neurological issues such as disorientation or paralysis, which may lead them to lie on the ground and come into contact with domestic pets. Infected animals may also react aggressively. Residents who encounter sick or disoriented bats are advised to contact the local veterinary office or a bat advisory service.
