Raccoon scent marking and associated health risks

Raccoons utilize scent marking through urine, feces, and secretions from anal glands to communicate social status, identity, and territory. While often misunderstood as spraying like skunks, raccoons primarily deposit these substances to leave olfactory signals rather than using them as a projectile defense mechanism.

Beyond communication, raccoon waste poses significant health risks. While raccoon urine is not inherently toxic, it can carry the eggs of Baylisascaris procyonis, a common intestinal roundworm. These microscopic eggs are highly resilient and can survive in the environment for years. If ingested, the parasite can cause severe neurological damage in humans and other animals.
