Raccoon survival and sleep patterns in the wild

Wild raccoons (Procyon lotor) typically have a short average lifespan of 2 to 3 years, though some may live up to 5 years under exceptionally favorable conditions. Their survival in the wild is challenged by predation from animals such as owls, coyotes, and foxes, as well as vehicle collisions, diseases like rabies and canine distemper, parasites, and starvation during harsh winters.

As primarily nocturnal animals, raccoons typically sleep between 12 and 14 hours a day. This sleep schedule serves as an evolutionary survival mechanism to avoid daytime predators and forage more effectively at night. Environmental factors also influence their rest; for instance, during winter, raccoons may enter a state of torpor to conserve energy, sleeping for up to 20 hours a day.
