Raccoons Occasionally Prey on Rabbits and Use Tiered Strategies When Threatened

Raccoons (Procyon lotor) are opportunistic omnivores that will kill rabbits when the chance arises, although rabbits are not a primary food source. Their diet includes fruits, nuts, insects, fish, small mammals and, when available, rabbits.

When faced with danger, raccoons employ a three‑stage response: they first attempt to avoid conflict, then may display defensive postures, and finally resort to aggressive action only if cornered or directly threatened. Their reactions depend on the type of threat, the animal’s age and experience, and the presence of offspring.
