Race Course Mosque in Delhi faces eviction notice

The Land and Development Office (L&DO) has issued a six-day eviction notice for the historic Race Course Mosque in New Delhi, claiming the century-old structure is an unauthorized occupation of government land. As part of the process, authorities disconnected the mosque’s electricity and water supplies on October 7 and closed its gates, creating significant difficulties for worshippers.

The mosque is listed as a heritage property on the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) website and is recorded in the 1977 Delhi Gazette. In response to the notice, a delegation from Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind and AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi have called for urgent intervention from Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju. They criticized the Delhi Waqf Board for failing to legally challenge the demolition order or provide meaningful assistance.

While security personnel have restricted access to the premises, some worshippers have continued to enter to offer prayers. The L&DO has identified the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) as the implementing agency for the action.
