Tunisian opposition leader Rached Ghannouchi denied family and lawyer visits after prison collapse

Rached Ghannouchi, the 84‑year‑old former speaker of parliament and Ennahda party leader, collapsed in a Tunisian prison on July 17 and was taken to hospital. For 11 days his family and lawyers have been barred from seeing or contacting him, despite requests to the public prosecutor and the prison authorities.

His son Moadh Ghannouchi told Al Jazeera the denial feels like an "enforced disappearance" and accused the authorities of exposing his father to a severe heatwave in a cell without air‑conditioning. The defense team posted on Facebook demanding immediate disclosure of Ghannouchi’s health status and permission for visits, accusing the state of violating his rights. Tunisian officials have offered no official comment, and rumors vary about whether he is at Rabta public hospital or a military facility. Ghannouchi has been detained since April 2023 after receiving a life sentence, which his supporters say is politically motivated.
