Racing Club separates Alfonso Espino from professional squad

Racing Club has decided to separate Uruguayan defender Alfonso Espino from the professional squad. The 34-year-old player will train apart from the team at the Tita Mattiussi facility until the end of the season.

The decision follows a series of incidents, including a confrontation during a derby against Independiente. During that match, Espino responded ironically to a supporter who criticized his physical condition by insulting the fan and showing his abdomen. While Espino later issued a public apology, stating, “I reacted badly, there is no doubt about that,” reports suggest a subsequent argument with a club official may have influenced the leadership's decision.

The club's management, led by Diego Milito, had previously imposed a financial fine on the player. This disciplinary action comes during a difficult period for the club, as Racing has failed to qualify for the Torneo Clausura playoffs and will not compete in international competitions next year.
