Radan Kanev urges EU to boost domestic metal production
European Parliament Member Radan Kanev has voiced support for an initiative by European Metals to strengthen the production of non-ferrous metals within the European Union. Kanev argues that the EU's ability to achieve energy independence and decarbonization is directly tied to its capacity for domestic metal production.
To preserve the industry and protect jobs, the initiative calls for competitive energy prices, protection against unfair competition, and improved investment conditions for European manufacturers. The production of these metals is described as essential for clean technologies, digital infrastructure, and defense capabilities.
The proposal outlines five key areas for EU action: industrial policy supporting European-made materials, energy and climate policies that balance emission reductions with competitiveness, stronger commercial defense against overcapacity in third countries, increased metal recycling and extraction, and more robust investment frameworks.
