Radboud University study finds universal patterns in tickle sensitivity

Researchers from Radboud University have identified that tickle sensitivity follows a consistent biological pattern that transcends cultural boundaries. A study published in Nature Human Behaviour analyzed 448 adults aged 18 to 30 from China, the Netherlands, and Greece to determine if sensitivity was shaped by cultural environment or a common physical pattern.

The findings revealed a similar corporal map across all three nationalities, with the most sensitive areas being the neck, armpits, abdomen, and soles of the feet. The study also noted that people tend to be more sensitive in areas of the body that are less frequently touched, a concept previously suggested by Charles Darwin.

While laughter is the most common reaction, researchers noted that the sensation is a complex response involving physical, emotional, and social factors. The study distinguishes between knismesis, a light tingling sensation, and gargalesis, which is the more intense reaction associated with laughter.
