Radhika Apte discusses challenges for female-led films in Bollywood
Actress Radhika Apte has addressed the commercial difficulties female actors face in the Hindi film industry regarding theatrical releases. In a recent interview, Apte noted that the unpredictable nature of the current box office makes it difficult for women-led films to secure strong openings.
Apte stated that, unlike Alia Bhatt or Deepika Padukone, she does not believe her name alone can guarantee a successful theatrical opening. She remarked, “A theatrical release where I am the lead would probably tank even if it’s the best film,” explaining that she often accepts roles in films with male leads to ensure commercial viability.
Regarding her project selection, Apte clarified that she does not prioritize whether a film is released in theaters or on streaming platforms (OTT), stating, “I don’t take a project based on whether it’s theatrical or OTT.”
Apte is currently promoting her upcoming Netflix series, Akka, produced by YRF Entertainment. Set in the 1980s, the series features Apte as Rudra and Keerthy Suresh as Bhavani.
