Home heating maintenance: Tips for radiator efficiency and noise reduction
Common household heating issues, such as inefficient temperature control and unusual noises, can be addressed with simple maintenance. Experts note that setting radiator valves to maximum settings does not increase heating speed but can lead to higher energy costs. In some regions, increasing the temperature by just one degree can raise energy bills by approximately 6 percent.
Radiator noises like clicking or ticking are often caused by the natural expansion and contraction of metal during heating cycles. This can sometimes be mitigated by ensuring plastic spacers are used on wall brackets to prevent metal-on-metal friction. Bubbling sounds typically indicate trapped air within the system. Bleeding the radiators to remove air pockets can restore heat distribution, particularly when the top of a radiator remains cold while the bottom is warm.
