Radiator maintenance tips for the upcoming heating season

As temperatures drop and the heating season approaches, experts recommend thoroughly cleaning radiators to improve energy efficiency and air quality. Dust, hair, and pollen often accumulate between convection fins and under top grilles during the summer. When heating is first turned on, warm air circulating through these dirty channels can distribute dust throughout the room and create unpleasant odors.

Effective cleaning should be performed while the radiator is completely cold. It is advised to use dry methods, such as a vacuum cleaner with a narrow attachment or a long, soft brush, to reach between the fins. One suggested technique involves placing a damp cloth under the radiator and using a hair dryer on a cool setting to dislodge dust, which is then caught by the cloth.

Caution is advised against pouring water directly into radiator slats, as this can damage walls, floors, insulation, or electrical components. While a brief dusty smell during the first use is common, users should immediately turn off the device and seek inspection if they detect smells of burning plastic, smoke, or see sparks, as these may indicate electrical issues.
