Radio industry sees shifting trends in listener support and station counts
The radio industry is experiencing shifting trends across different sectors. According to the Jacobs Media Public Radio Techsurvey 2026, public radio listeners remain highly loyal despite economic pressures. While 53% of respondents reported that the economy is negatively impacting their households, 72% of those surveyed indicated they are increasing their support due to the political climate, and 42% have increased their annual donations. Research also indicates that the public radio audience is aging and that stations are beginning to explore video content to engage listeners.
Broadcasting data shows a decline in total station counts for the third consecutive quarter. While FM educational stations have seen growth, increasing from 4,207 in 2022 to 4,815 in 2026, this has not been enough to offset declines in other areas. AM stations decreased from 4,490 to 4,258 over the same period, and commercial FM stations dropped from 6,677 to 6,540.
