Radio stations in Hessen shift DAB+ broadcasting strategies

The digital radio landscape in Hessen is undergoing changes following a decision by the non-commercial local station Radio X to exit DAB+ broadcasting. As of September 1, 2024, Radio X is no longer available via digital terrestrial radio, opting instead to focus on FM (UKW) and its digital livestream.

The station cited a decision by the Medienanstalt Hessen to limit funding for the seven non-commercial local radio stations to only two distribution methods. Radio X leadership stated that FM remains their primary channel due to its reliability and wide reach, while digital listeners primarily use internet streams via smartphones or smart speakers.

Concurrently, the rock station RADIO BOB! is expanding its digital presence in the region. Following the allocation of digital transmission capacities by the Medienanstalt Hessen, RADIO BOB! has begun broadcasting via regional DAB+ multiplexes in both North and South Hessen, supplementing its existing FM coverage.
