Radio legend Carlos Benavides Portilla dies, funeral held in Pasto, Colombia

Renowned radio broadcaster Carlos Benavides Portilla, widely regarded as a master of Nariño's radio, passed away. His funeral was scheduled for Saturday, 25 July, at 10:30 a.m. in the Cathedral of Pasto, drawing large attendance from family, colleagues, and the community.

Benavides' career spanned several decades across Colombia and Ecuador, including work at RCN, La Voz del Galeras, Ondas del Mayo, and Radio Viva. He founded and directed the long‑running program "Guascarilera," which became a regional staple known for its community focus and distinctive style. Tributes highlighted his human qualities, professionalism, and mentorship of younger journalists.
