Police and specialist units carried out a large‑scale operation in St. Ingbert, Saarland, after receiving tips that a 24‑year‑old man was storing radioactive minerals in his apartment. The residence was sealed and radiation levels measured, confirming elevated readings. Authorities said the material is a naturally occurring rock with inherent radioactivity and possible heavy‑metal contamination; mechanical processing could release hazardous dust. The CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear) unit, fire services and radiation experts were deployed, and two additional properties linked to the suspect’s relatives were searched, yielding only small amounts of material. Police emphasized that there is no risk to neighbouring residents and no arrests have been made so far. The investigation continues to identify the exact composition and quantity of the substances.
