São Paulo police recover stolen radioactive medical material

The Civil Police of São Paulo have recovered a shipment of Actinium-225, a radioactive isotope used in cancer treatments, which was stolen during a van robbery on the Presidente Dutra Highway in Guarulhos.

The material, valued at approximately 30,000 reais, was located on Monday night in a vacant lot in the São Rafael neighborhood, in the East Zone of São Paulo. The National Nuclear Safety Authority (ANSN) confirmed the recovery after the packaging was identified as compatible with the stolen cargo. The manufacturer in the United States also verified the container's authenticity via photographic evidence.

Authorities stated that the Actinium-225 poses a low radiological risk to the public because it is an alpha emitter with low penetration power and was found in intact packaging. The stolen van had been previously discovered partially dismantled in Ferraz de Vasconcelos. The material was intended for use at Hospital A. C. Camargo. Investigations into the identity of the four armed individuals involved in the robbery are ongoing.
