Radioactive medical material stolen from vehicle in Guarulhos
A vehicle transporting Actinium-225, a radioactive material used for medical treatments, was stolen in Guarulhos, Greater São Paulo. The theft occurred on Thursday, involving a Citroën Jumpy Furgão marked with international radiation symbols.
During the incident, four armed individuals intercepted the vehicle on the Via Dutra highway. The 58-year-old driver was held hostage until Friday morning, when he was released near Marechal Tito in eastern São Paulo. Authorities have since located the driver, but the vehicle and the radioactive cargo remain missing.
The National Nuclear Safety Authority (ANSN) stated that the material does not pose a danger as long as the packaging remains closed. However, opening the containers or direct contact with the substance could lead to radiation exposure. The ANSN and the Institute of Radioprotection and Dosimetry have advised the public not to touch or manipulate the vehicle or its contents if found, and to isolate the area and contact authorities immediately.
