Warsaw court dismisses murder case against University of Warsaw student

The District Court in Warsaw has dismissed criminal proceedings against Mieszko R., a 22-year-old law student accused of the brutal axe murder of a 53-year-old University of Warsaw employee in May 2025. The decision follows psychiatric evaluations determining that the suspect was legally insane and suffering from psychotic disorders at the time of the attack.

While the criminal case is dismissed, the court ordered Mieszko R. to be placed in a closed psychiatric facility as a security measure. This detention does not have a fixed end date; instead, the court will review the necessity of his continued isolation every six months. Defense attorneys noted that due to the severity of his condition, long-term treatment is expected.

The incident occurred at the University of Warsaw campus near the Auditorium Maximum. The victim, a university porter, died at the scene, and a 39-year-old security guard was also seriously injured while attempting to intervene. Mieszko R. had previously faced charges of murder with extreme cruelty, desecration of a corpse, and attempted murder.
