Poland seeks permanent G20 membership amid diplomatic friction

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski announced that Poland is actively campaigning for permanent membership in the G20. He stated that the United States has tabled a resolution to propose Poland as a permanent member, and the country hopes to secure this status during the current U.S. presidency.

Sikorski reported receiving support from India, noting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi committed to backing the bid during a recent meeting with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. The minister also indicated that he has engaged with counterparts from Argentina, Canada, South Korea, Indonesia, and Saudi Arabia, reporting generally positive responses.

The bid has drawn criticism from Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who attended the G20 Foreign Ministers meeting in Atlanta. Lavrov argued that inviting Poland is counterproductive and violates diplomatic principles of consensus. He claimed Poland does not contribute enough to the group and lacks an economy large enough for membership, adding that NATO and the EU already provide sufficient representation for the region.

During the Atlanta meetings, European delegates reportedly declined to participate in a group photo with Lavrov. Sikorski also used the platform to call for a ceasefire in the Black Sea to protect grain shipments and addressed the ongoing impact of the Russia-Ukraine war.
