Radosław Sikorski: Frozen Russian assets should fund Ukraine
Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has stated that approximately 210 billion euros in frozen Russian central bank assets held within the European Union should not be returned to Moscow. Speaking at the Europe Future Forum in Warsaw, Sikorski argued that these funds should instead be used for reparations, the reconstruction of Ukraine, or to mitigate ongoing destruction caused by the war.
Sikorski emphasized that the cost of Russian aggression should be borne by Russian state assets rather than European taxpayers. He noted that while the EU is already utilizing extraordinary income generated from these frozen funds to support Ukraine, the permanent seizure of the capital itself requires a solid legal and political foundation among member states. He stressed that any decision must be legally robust enough to withstand court challenges and protect the stability of the European financial system.
