Radosław Sikorski proposes ‘European Legion’ for EU military integration

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has proposed the creation of a ‘European Legion,’ a permanent military unit designed to deepen military integration within the European Union. The proposed force would recruit experienced professionals from across the European family, including battle-hardened Ukrainian veterans following the conclusion of the war.

Sikorski emphasized that this legion is not intended to be an alternative to NATO, but rather a way to strengthen the European pillar within the alliance. He noted that while the United States remains an indispensable anchor for collective defense, providing unmatched technological and intelligence capabilities, Europe must take on more responsibility for security on the ground.

The proposed unit would initially consist of a brigade-sized force, subject to the Foreign Affairs Council and funded by the EU budget. Sikorski suggested such a force would be capable of addressing lower-level threats, such as those in the Balkans or North Africa, rather than serving as a primary deterrent against Russia.
