Radosław Sikorski warns against premature negotiations with Russia

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has warned Europe against entering premature negotiations with Russia. Writing in The Economist, Sikorski argued that attempting to appease the Kremlin before it undergoes a strategic shift could strengthen Vladimir Putin and weaken Western support for Ukraine.

Sikorski noted that since the collapse of the Soviet Union, various international efforts—including those by the United States and Poland—to integrate Russia into the community of responsible nations have been rejected. He cited Russia's actions in Georgia, the annexation of Crimea, and the full-scale invasion of Ukraine as evidence that dialogue alone has not changed the nature of Kremlin policy.

The Minister emphasized that peace should increase security rather than reward aggression. He stated, “When Mr. Putin is ready for peace, he will find a way to communicate it,” suggesting that negotiations should only occur when they can lead to a lasting end to the war without giving Russia the impression that violence is effective.
