A major incident has been declared in Gloucestershire, England, following the arrest of five men near RAF Fairford, a military airbase used by the United States Air Force. The arrests were initially made on suspicion of offences under the Explosives Act, but the suspects are now also being held on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act.

The incident began early Sunday morning after reports of three suspicious vehicles moving toward the base. Gloucestershire Police established a 400-meter security perimeter around the vehicles, and a specialist Army bomb disposal team was deployed to examine them. As a precaution, approximately 85 households in the nearby village of Welford were evacuated to a local leisure centre.

Counter Terrorism Policing is leading the investigation. While authorities have stated the incident is currently contained, armed police maintained a presence at the base's main gate. The base is strategically significant as a hub for US bomber operations in Europe, particularly following recent UK authorization for US use of the facility for defensive operations related to Middle East tensions.

Defense Minister Wes Streeting expressed confidence in the emergency response, noting that specialist teams and the Armed Forces are on standby 24/7. US Air Force officials stated their personnel remain vigilant and are taking necessary measures to ensure the safety of service members and their families.
