RAF Molesworth: Two Latvian men arrested after security breach

Two Latvian nationals, aged 32 and 36, have been arrested following a security breach at RAF Molesworth in Cambridgeshire. The facility is a non-flying base operated by the U.S. Air Force and serves as a major intelligence hub, housing the NATO Intelligence Fusion Centre and U.S. military intelligence operations for Europe and Africa.

The incident was detected on a Wednesday night after security patrols discovered an abandoned vehicle near the perimeter. Subsequent searches identified a small breach in the base's fence. The suspects, who are residents of the United Kingdom, were apprehended inside the perimeter in the early hours of Thursday.

While initially detained for trespass and criminal damage, the men were later arrested under Section 4 of the National Security Act 2023 for entering a prohibited place for a purpose prejudicial to the United Kingdom. Counter-terrorism police are leading the investigation, which includes searches at addresses in the Peterborough area.

Commander Helen Flanagan, Head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, stated that there is currently no evidence linking this breach to a recent security incident at RAF Fairford. Authorities are continuing to investigate the potential motivations behind the men's presence at the site.
