Rafael Advanced Defense Systems unveils hypersonic interceptor in Washington
At the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) Annual Meeting & Exposition in Washington, D.C., Israeli defense firm Rafael Advanced Defense Systems showcased new capabilities and addressed recent combat experiences. CEO Yoav Tourgeman stated that despite firing thousands of interceptors during recent conflicts with Iran, the company ended the period with more Tamir interceptors in stock than when the fighting began.
Tourgeman emphasized that industrial capacity is now as critical as technical performance, noting that modern warfare requires the ability to sustain operations through prolonged campaigns. Rafael is utilizing a layered defense approach to match specific threats, ranging from drones to ballistic missiles.
Additionally, Rafael unveiled a full-scale model of its Sky Sonic interceptor. Designed to counter hypersonic threats, the system aims to match speeds between Mach 5 and 10 to intercept atmospheric cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and glide vehicles. The project, which has been under development for several years, represents a strategic response to the increasing global prevalence of hypersonic weaponry.
