Rafael Bittencourt clarifies stance amid Angra controversy
Rafael Bittencourt, founding guitarist of the heavy metal band Angra, issued a statement to clarify his political and social stances following a controversy involving former band members and a Brazilian politician.
The dispute began after images circulated of Eduarda Campopiano, an elected state deputy for the Liberal Party (PL) in São Paulo, wearing an Angra t-shirt. This led to aggressive comments from former band members. Marco Antunes directed insults at the lawmaker, while a screenshot attributed to former guitarist Kiko Loureiro was also circulated; however, Loureiro has publicly denied writing the comment.
In his response, Bittencourt described himself as a “democrat, progressive, and humanist,” stating that these convictions are reflected in his music, personal relationships, and professional life. He emphasized that he does not support any ideas that attack human dignity, equality of rights, or respect for differences. Bittencourt noted that democracy and human rights are “non-negotiable principles” and stated that these values should not depend on political parties.
