Rafael Correa demands apology and handover of Jorge Glas to normalize Ecuador-Mexico ties

Former Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa has stated that normalizing diplomatic relations between Ecuador and Mexico requires a formal apology from the government of Daniel Noboa, reparations for damages caused by the April 2024 raid on the Mexican Embassy in Quito, and the handover of former Vice President Jorge Glas.

Correa, speaking in Mexico City, described the state-ordered entry of Ecuadorian police into the diplomatic mission to apprehend Glas—who had been granted political asylum by Mexico—as a “gravísimo” (extremely serious) incident without comparable precedent. He noted that Ecuador has suffered more from the two-year diplomatic rupture due to Mexico’s status as the second-largest economy in Latin America.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has previously indicated that a swift normalization of ties is unlikely, maintaining that any country would sever relations following an embassy invasion. Correa also commented on the regional political landscape, suggesting that Latin America is “in dispute” as leftist and conservative forces compete for influence.
