Rafael Jodar faces criticism over on-court conduct

Spanish tennis player Rafael Jodar is facing scrutiny regarding his behavior toward ball kids following an incident at the Shanghai Masters. During a match against Botic Van de Zandschulp, the World No. 11 used offensive language toward a ball kid after a delay in receiving a towel, resulting in a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Former coach Brad Gilbert described the behavior as “inexcusable,” noting that players should never lose their temper with ball kids. This incident follows previous controversies at the French Open and Wimbledon, though Jodar has issued an apology for the Shanghai event.

Despite the reputational challenges, the 20-year-old has experienced a rapid ascent in the rankings. After starting the year at world No. 165, Jodar has reached the Top 15 and is considered a favorite for upcoming tournaments such as the Swiss Indoors in Basel.
