Peru's JNE Clears Rafael López Aliaga to Run for Lima Deputy Mayor

The Plenary of Peru's National Jury of Elections (JNE) declared the appeal filed by Renovación Popular founded on 13 July 2026, overturning the earlier decision of the Special Electoral Jury (JEE) that had barred Rafael López Aliaga from registering as a candidate for first regidor (deputy mayor) of the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima. The JNE concluded that López Aliaga’s status as an elected but not sworn‑in senator for the 2026‑2031 parliamentary term does not legally prevent him from seeking municipal office. López Aliaga has repeatedly affirmed he will not take the Senate seat, having neither taken the oath nor assumed any legislative duties.

With the ruling, López Aliaga can remain on the electoral list headed by mayoral candidate Luis Rubio for the municipal elections scheduled for 4 October 2026. The tribunal announced the decision via a brief communiqué and said the full, reasoned resolution will be posted on its website in the coming days.
