Rafael López Aliaga taps comedian Carlos Álvarez for Lima security plan
Rafael López Aliaga, president of the Renovación Popular party, announced that former presidential candidate and comedian Carlos Álvarez will lead the security plan for Lima's municipal campaign ahead of the 2026 elections. The initiative, presented at a press conference with mayoral hopeful Luis Rubio, aims to combat organized crime, sicariato and extortion through measures such as 10,000 AI‑enabled cameras, extensive LED street‑lighting and a “serenazgo sin fronteras” network coordinating local safety forces.
López Aliaga, who will run for mayor with Rubio as the candidate and himself as lieutenant mayor, described the partnership as a “hand of iron” effort to restore peace. Álvarez pledged to work with police, regional authorities and community leaders, emphasizing both firm enforcement and dialogue with residents. He also extended an invitation to former presidential contender Carlos Espá to join the campaign.
The plan is positioned as a central theme of Renovación Popular’s bid to retain the Lima mayoralty for a second term, portraying security as the primary concern for the capital’s millions of inhabitants.
