Rafael Márquez appointed Mexico coach, plans 2026 friendlies vs Colombia and Peru

Rafael Márquez has been confirmed as the new head coach of the Mexico national football team following the country's elimination from the 2026 World Cup. He will lead the squad through the next cycle, aiming toward the 2030 tournament.

Márquez's first assignments are set for the September‑October 2026 FIFA window. Mexico will face Colombia in Baltimore and Peru in New Jersey, with both matches scheduled in the United States. The federation is also negotiating additional games against the United States and Chile to complete a four‑match schedule.

Before taking the Mexico job, Márquez coached Barcelona Atlètic, where he helped develop youth talents Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsí. Those players later starred for Spain's World Cup‑winning side in 2026, highlighting Márquez’s reputation for nurturing future stars.
