St. Louis CITY SC breaks MLS record with $12M Rafael Navarro trade

St. Louis CITY SC has completed a record-breaking internal transfer in Major League Soccer (MLS), acquiring Brazilian forward Rafael Navarro from the Colorado Rapids. The deal is valued at $12 million in cash, plus $250,000 in conditional bonuses and a percentage of any future resale to Colorado.

This transaction marks the most expensive cash-for-player trade between two MLS franchises in league history. The move signals a shift in the league's economic landscape, as clubs increasingly utilize significant cash reserves for intra-league transfers rather than relying solely on allocation money or international signings.

Navarro, a 26-year-old Designated Player, signed a contract through the 2029-30 season with an option for 2030-31. He joins St. Louis following a productive stint in Colorado, where he recorded 10 league goals this season. St. Louis manager Yoann Damet highlighted Navarro’s work ethic and pressing ability as key assets for the team as they look to bolster their attacking depth.
