Volkswagen Osnabrück plant to transition to defense manufacturing
Volkswagen has reached a preliminary agreement to sell its Osnabrück plant to a consortium comprising the investment firm Aurelius Capital and the German state of Lower Saxony. The deal aims to transform the facility from an automotive manufacturing site into a competence center for security and defense solutions.
Automotive production, including the current T-Roc Cabriolet, is scheduled to phase out by the second half of 2027. The new entity plans to focus on producing components for air defense systems, with an initial anchor project involving collaboration with the Israeli defense company Rafael Advanced Defense Systems. This partnership is expected to facilitate the production of components for systems such as the Iron Dome, including heavy trucks, launchers, and generators.
The proposed ownership structure is designed to bypass potential opposition from the Qatar Investment Authority, a significant Volkswagen shareholder. By involving Lower Saxony and Aurelius as the primary owners, the deal avoids a direct partnership between Volkswagen and Rafael.
Regarding employment, the transition is expected to secure long-term prospects for approximately 1,400 of the plant's 1,800 employees. Job security measures are reportedly in place through the end of 2029, with efforts continuing to find solutions for the remaining workforce.
