Rafaela Cave legend celebrated in Maquiteria, Dominican Republic

In the town of Maquiteria, Dominican Republic, a two‑entrance cave on Primera Street No. 138 is known as the Cueva de Rafaela. The cave houses a crystal‑clear spring that flows continuously, which locals say preserves the memory of past visitors.

Each year the cave becomes the focal point of a seven‑day festival ending on 29 September. The celebration features drums, chants, wooden rituals, the sacrifice of a bull, and a communal goat feast. The events honor the legend of Rafaela, a respected woman described as a strong‑willed community leader and priestess who died in 2021. The tradition draws people from surrounding areas who come to experience the music, the spring, and the folklore surrounding the cave.
