Rafale Marine fighter successfully lands on India's INS Vikrant

A French-made Rafale Marine fighter aircraft successfully completed its maiden landing on the Indian Navy's indigenous aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant, on October 29, 2026. The aircraft, operated by a French pilot, successfully engaged the carrier's arresting wires on its first attempt.

These trials are part of a larger effort to integrate the Rafale Marine into the Indian Navy's fleet, where it is intended to replace the aging Russian-built MiG-29K/KUB aircraft. The successful landing validates the aircraft's compatibility with the Short Take-Off But Arrested Recovery (STOBAR) system used by the INS Vikrant, which utilizes a ski-jump ramp for launches rather than the catapult systems found on French or American carriers.

India signed a government-to-government agreement with France in April 2025 to procure 26 Rafale Marine jets, valued at approximately Rs 63,000 crore. The order includes 22 single-seat fighters and four twin-seat trainer aircraft. The deal also encompasses pilot training, flight simulators, weapons, and long-term maintenance support. To support the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, the agreement includes technology transfers to allow for the integration of indigenous Indian weapons onto the aircraft.
