Rwanda secures 10-year Formula 1 agreement for 2030s race

Rwanda has signed a 10-year agreement to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix, marking the sport’s return to the African continent for the first time since 1993. The race is expected to join the calendar in the early 2030s once a purpose-built circuit is completed in Bugesera, located approximately 40 kilometers south of Kigali near the new international airport.

Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time world champion currently driving for Ferrari, expressed strong support for the move, noting that racing in Africa has been a long-held dream. Hamilton suggested that the prospect of competing in the African Grand Prix might prompt him to extend his racing career into his mid-forties.

To support the economic ambitions surrounding the event, Raffles Family Office has signed a strategic agreement with the Rwanda Development Board. The partnership aims to mobilize hundreds of millions of dollars in private foreign investment from ultra-high-net-worth individuals across Asia and Africa to fund infrastructure, tourism, and hospitality projects in Bugesera, Kigali, and Musanze.
