Rafina Great Stream interventions spark flood risk warnings

Concerns have been raised regarding interventions in the Great Stream of Rafina, specifically within the Petreza area, which serves as one of the last natural floodplains in Attica. The Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (ELKETHE) has issued a warning that activities such as bed deepening, alignment, and the removal of riparian vegetation may impair the area's natural ability to absorb and slow down floodwaters. Experts warn these actions could accelerate water flow toward inhabited areas during extreme rainfall, increasing flood risks.

During a meeting of the Rafina-Pikermi Municipal Council, complaints were filed regarding contradictory works in the stream bed. While some areas have undergone clearing, other sections have reportedly experienced significant siltation or earth-filling. Local officials questioned why the bed is being opened in some places only to be filled in others.

Dimitra Tseva, the Mayor of Rafina-Pikermi, clarified that the management of the Great Stream falls under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Infrastructure rather than the municipality. She noted that the issue has been raised with the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure to investigate these conflicting interventions.
