Sicily infrastructure: major road maintenance and safety works underway
Sicily is undergoing extensive infrastructure and safety works across its road networks. The Ministry of Infrastructure has deployed inspectors to monitor the A18 Messina-Catania and A20 Messina-Palermo highways. These highways face significant maintenance requirements, including tunnel repairs and pavement work, which have led to mandatory traffic diversions and lane restrictions through late 2026.
In Caltagirone, a 1.5 million euro project has been launched to secure the Santo Stefano district within the historic center. The initiative aims to mitigate hydrogeological risks, such as landslides and water infiltration, through sewage network reconstruction and structural reinforcement of slopes.
Additionally, regional road maintenance is underway in other areas. In the Trapani province, over 2.2 million euros are being invested to repair provincial roads SP 50, 62, and 40, with completion expected by March 2028. In the Ragusa and Scicli territories, approximately 1.9 million euros have been allocated for the maintenance of regional roads SR 61, 63, and 73 to improve safety and drainage.
