Sicily police disrupt multiple “false Carabiniere” scams targeting elderly

Authorities in Sicily have intercepted several attempts by criminals to defraud elderly citizens using the “false Carabiniere” technique. In Alessandria della Rocca, two men from Catania, aged 43 and 21, were reported to the Sciacca Prosecutor's Office for allegedly convincing a pensioner to hand over gold jewelry by impersonating law enforcement.

In Ragusa, police arrested two men, aged 36 and 22, caught in the act while attempting a similar scam. The suspects were following a 74-year-old woman via GPS after a co-conspirator contacted her by phone, claiming to be a Carabiniere requiring urgent judicial checks on her valuables.

Additionally, in Priolo Gargallo, a 48-year-old man was reported for a failed attempt to trick a 78-year-old woman. The scam was thwarted when the woman's daughter returned home, leading to a 112 emergency call and the immediate intervention of the Carabinieri.
