Catania restaurants fined 35,000 euros for illegal work and safety violations

Labor inspectors from the Territorial Labor Inspection, supported by police units, examined two downtown eateries in Catania – a restaurant in Piazza Carlo Alberto and a pizzeria near the stadium. The inspections uncovered four cases of undeclared employment, with four of six workers found to be undocumented, leading to the suspension of the businesses pending regularisation. Food‑safety violations were also recorded: frozen and expired items were being served, and the owners failed to provide required ingredient information. The combined penalties totalled €35,000, including €2,000 for hygiene breaches, €2,000 for missing product transparency, and over €10,000 for illegal labour practices. Additional infractions such as illegal outdoor seating and traffic violations in the vicinity resulted in 25 further fines.
