Italy advances waste management and circular economy initiatives

Various environmental and waste management initiatives are progressing across Italy, ranging from technological innovations to infrastructure developments and remediation efforts.

In research and technology, the EXTRA-CELL project, a winner of the Seed4Innovation program by the University of Milan, aims to transform diverse biomass into standardized cellulose for packaging and biomedical use. Similarly, the YouRban project, coordinated by the Politecnico di Milano, has developed a mobile truck for the on-site recycling of composite materials like fiberglass. The PERCIVAL project at the University of Ferrara is also working on a biorefinery model to extract bioactive compounds from grape and citrus waste.

Regarding infrastructure and waste services, Iren is implementing a new door-to-door collection system in Farini. In Sicily, a malfunction at the TMB plant in Ragusa has disrupted waste collection in several municipalities, including Scicli and Pozzallo. Meanwhile, in Serradifalco, companies are seeking extensions for waste treatment facilities. New landfill projects are also facing local opposition, such as in San Giovanni Suergiu.

Environmental remediation efforts include the Lazio Region allocating over 625,000 euros for the cleanup of the former powder magazine in Anagni. Additionally, 11.3 million euros have been designated for various environmental projects, including asbestos removal and the completion of a composting plant in Nuoro.
