Rahil Prakash admitted to spreading fake political polls
Rahil Prakash, a 21-year-old college graduate, has admitted to releasing fabricated political polling data through a fictitious consultancy named Median Strategies. Prakash described the actions as a “short-term social experiment” intended to demonstrate how easily unverified data can penetrate and be legitimized within the modern information ecosystem.
The fake polls impacted several high-profile races, including the Los Angeles mayoral race, the Wisconsin governor’s Democratic primary, and two statewide races in Nevada. In one instance, the misinformation suggested a Democratic Socialist candidate held a 20 to 23-point lead in Wisconsin, which influenced campaign strategy and resource allocation during the final days of the race.
While the incident highlights the vulnerability of modern polling and the potential for disinformation to sway political decisions, legal experts note that Prakash may face little to no legal consequence, as spreading falsehoods can be protected under the First Amendment.
