Vaibhav Suryavanshi faces red-ball challenge in Duleep Trophy debut

Fifteen-year-old cricket prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi faced a challenging red-ball debut in the Duleep Trophy, representing East Zone against North East Zone in Bengaluru. Opening the innings alongside Abhimanyu Easwaran, Suryavanshi was dismissed for eight runs off six deliveries after hitting two boundaries, falling to pacer Bishworjit Konthoujam.

Former Indian captain Rahul Dravid has emphasized the necessity of a balanced development for the teenager, noting that while Suryavanshi has excelled in white-ball cricket and the IPL, he requires significant exposure to red-ball cricket to become a sustainable all-format player. Dravid stressed the importance of patience as the young athlete navigates the transition to longer formats.

Suryavanshi, who was appointed vice-captain of the East Zone squad, enters the tournament with a modest first-class average of 17.25 from eight matches. His performance in this domestic competition is viewed as a critical step in his development and a potential audition for future national selection and upcoming events like the Asian Games.
