Rahul Gandhi Leads Parliamentary Protest Over July 20 Student Crackdown
Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi has repeatedly demanded that Union Home Minister Amit Shah appear in Parliament to answer questions about the police action against student demonstrators on July 20. The India bloc of opposition parties staged a march inside the Lok Sabha, carrying a banner that read “Amit Shah Jawaab Do”, and called for a Supreme Court‑monitored inquiry into the alleged use of tear‑gas, baton charges and pellet guns that injured several protesters.
Gandhi also held press meetings with the students, describing them as “saviours of the Constitution” and accusing the government of sending goons to their homes and forcing apologies. In response, BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia accused Gandhi of deliberately disrupting parliamentary business to avoid a debate on the government’s record of repatriating 274 fugitives from 36 countries between 2019 and 2026, a claim the party says yielded roughly Rs 19,000 crore.
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju met Gandhi to discuss breaking the parliamentary deadlock, with the opposition insisting that any breakthrough must include the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah for a discussion on the student crackdown and the Ram Temple donation controversy. Youth Congress activists in Mumbai also staged protests, alleging the government targeted peaceful students instead of pursuing the alleged NEET paper‑leak perpetrators.
