Rahul Gandhi Demands Modi’s Resignation After Student Protest Crackdown
Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi led a sit‑in protest outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official residence in New Delhi, demanding the resignation of the prime minister, Home Minister Amit Shah and Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The protest was a response to a police crackdown on student demonstrators who were rallying against alleged NEET‑UG exam paper leaks and calling for reforms of the education system. Police deployed tear‑gas, batons and lathi charges, injuring dozens of protesters and over a hundred officers, and later detained Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Akhilesh Yadav and other opposition figures.
The government sent Union Minister of State Jitendra Singh to the site for talks, pledging to discuss the NEET issue in Parliament, but the opposition continued to demand accountability, holding parallel demonstrations in Parliament and at Jantar Mantar. The movement, known as the “Cockroach” protest, has grown to involve thousands of students and citizens nationwide, highlighting deep political tension over youth rights and democratic protest.
Congress leaders also presented a memorandum to the Khandwa collectorate and staged a black‑clad protest inside Parliament, while the ruling NDA defended its handling of the protests and called for dialogue with the students.
