Rahul Gandhi faces Supreme Court rulings on defamation and asset probe

Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi is facing multiple legal and parliamentary developments in India. The Supreme Court has quashed a criminal defamation complaint against him regarding remarks made about Hindutva ideologue V. D. Savarkar during the 2022 Bharat Jodo Yatra. The court ruled that the prosecution lacked the mandatory sanction from the Uttar Pradesh government.

Separately, Gandhi has approached the Supreme Court to challenge an Allahabad High Court order. That order directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to investigate allegations of disproportionate assets against him, following a petition by BJP worker S Vignesh Shishir. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear this plea on August 17, 2026.

Additionally, the Lok Sabha Committee of Privileges has issued a notice to Gandhi, requiring a response by August 28, 2026. This follows complaints from BJP MPs Anurag Thakur and Dr. Sanjay Jaiswal alleging that Gandhi used unparliamentary and offensive language against Union Home Minister Amit Shah during a parliamentary debate.
