INDIA bloc to march to Supreme Court over electoral roll controversy

The Congress-led INDIA bloc has announced a massive march to the Supreme Court in New Delhi to protest against the Election Commission of India. The opposition is demanding the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and a halt to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which they allege is being used to unlawfully delete valid voters.

Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi stated that the march aims to unite citizens across political, caste, and regional lines to defend the Constitution. The opposition also alleges “vote theft” and claims that recent changes to voter registration forms are unconstitutional.

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant declined a request for a meeting with opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, advising them instead to submit their concerns through a formal legal petition. In response to the planned demonstrations, authorities deployed over 30,000 security personnel in the capital and implemented Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita in parts of New Delhi. Several Delhi Metro stations were also closed to manage security during the unrest.
